6 Ways to Stand Out in the Seasonal Employment Pool

by Lydia Dishman, PayScale.com

It's a competitive job market out there--the unemployment rate is still unpleasantly close to 10 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and you can bet that the seasonal employment pool will be well stocked with qualified candidates during this year's holidays. Here's how can you set yourself apart from other applicants.

Stick to the basics.
Robert Hosking, executive director of the staffing service OfficeTeam, reports that a recent survey by the company found applicants willing to wield any weapon in their arsenal to stand out--from spritzing resumes with perfume to parking them inside toy trucks.

But Hosking says these methods are not the best approach: "While unconventional methods can be hit or miss," he says, "one surefire way to stand out is by going the extra mile to showcase your skill set, professionalism, and enthusiasm for the position."

He said the executives surveyed responded most to the candidates who offered excellent references and could demonstrate actual achievements. "No matter how relevant or impressive your skill set, employers want to see how your expertise and efforts will affect the company's bottom line."

Do your homework.
Even though the job is seasonal (and temporary), you need to prepare for the interview, advises Dianne Shaddock Austin, principal at Easy Small Business HR. "Do your research on the company or the industry and be prepared to provide actual or hypothetical work-related examples that highlight your understanding of the job or the industry," she recommends.

Conduct market research.
Kim N. Carswell, founder of Persona Affairs, LLC, advocates preparing your own personal brand statement or elevator pitch to fit each company's brand message. "It shouldn't include 'I just need a job,'" she says, but should highlight your commitment--for example, "I'm open to full-time employment once my competency has been demonstrated." Carswell also suggests branding each of your resumes based on accomplishments, credentials, and overall potential to make it employer-friendly. "Tweak resumes for each company and include social media marketing ability if applicable," she says.

Polish your appearance.
Carswell says it's important to dress appropriately, even if you are interviewing at a retail store. And your presentation doesn't end there, she says: "Have your resume printed on bonded paper to leave with a manager even if they have an online application." She also suggests asking for a business card and following up by sending your resume via email within 72 hours. "Don't forget to make a mental note of the operations--mood, customer service, product line, and so on--so you can comment on your visit in your note," says Carswell.

Show commitment.
Even though the job may be seasonal, Austin cautions applicants not to say they're interested only in a temporary position until something else in their field comes along. "Every hiring manager wants to know that you're excited about their job, no matter how mundane the role may be. They don't want to feel like you're only interested until something better comes along," she explains.

Go the extra mile.
Personal gestures can go a long way, whether you're just beginning to network or after you've been interviewed. Taking time to find out more about the potential employer's business, names of top executives, and who competitors are can be useful in setting yourself apart during initial conversations--especially if you've reached out via social media. Hosking says one executive really liked when the job seeker turned the table and wanted to know all about him. "The tactic worked," he admitted.

After you've snagged an interview, Hosking advises sending a thank-you note or a pertinent news article to follow up. "It can make a lasting, positive impression," he says.

Make the Most of Life at Work

By Elizabeth Hanink

I will learn something new for my job every day. Start with something simple: a new word, a new tool, a new map. Or, if you are ambitious, set a larger goal but break it down into small chunks. Say you want to learn a new computer application. Get the manual or instructions and do a page a day. Help yourself along by keeping a note card that lists each day’s item.

I will live within my income. This is such a no-brainer and yet so difficult. Each slip up makes it harder because the interest on all credit eventually comes from our income. Small works best. Not, “I will forgo buying clothes for a year,” more like, “I will not spend on anything discretionary until this month’s bills are paid.” Discretionary includes movies, lattes, clothes, getaways, eating out and the like. You know the drill.

I will, through attitude and action, make the workplace a better place to be. The sky’s the limit here, but start with eliminating snarky remarks and move on to helpful actions. Anticipate rather than wait to be nagged. Clean up. Come in early or stay late once in a while without making it a federal case. Overlook slights and resist requests only when they are truly unreasonable.

In down economic times, companies seem to have carte blanche to limit salaries and make low-ball offers. But that shouldn't be the case.

Below are the top salary secrets your employer doesn't want you to know. With this information in hand, you'll be in a better position to get the pay you deserve.

Employers don't always offer a fair salary.

Some employers think they're being fair, but they're not up-to-date with the latest salary information. Others may try to pay less than the market value because they're financially strapped. That's why it's important that you know exactly how much money you should be making. A free salary report can help you calculate how much you should be earning in any job.

You can negotiate your salary in a tight job market.

In a recession, many people would rather take a pay cut than lose their jobs. Raises are hard to come by and new hires may feel they have less negotiating power. But that doesn't mean it's impossible to bump up your salary; it's just a little more challenging.

According to a recent survey from the Society for Human Resource Management, 80 percent of HR professionals say employers are willing to negotiate salaries. So, if you're looking for a raise at your current job, come armed with your marketplace worth and make your case. And, if you've been offered a job that pays less than you like, don't be afraid to name your realistic asking price. Keep in mind that, if you got the offer, you're clearly the best candidate for the job -- even in this highly competitive job market.

New hires sometimes earn more than long-term employees.

When there's a strong job market, organizations need to do whatever they can to attract top candidates. This often means that starting salaries may be higher for newbies than they are for long-term employees. Given the current economic conditions, that's less the norm these days, but it still happens in certain industries. If you suspect that a new hire with similar responsibilities is making more than you are, use current salary data to approach your manager with the request to bring your salary up to par.

Your performance doesn't decide your pay.

While your performance is one important factor in the salary equation, your pay is also a reflection of many other factors, including:

  • The job market -- lower pay is more acceptable in tighter job markets.
  • Location -- generally the higher the cost of living, the higher your salary.
  • Years of service -- in many cases, the longer you've been with a company, the higher your pay.
  • Organization size -- large organizations tend to pay more than small ones.
  • Education level -- in most cases, the more education you have, the higher your pay. Take a free education test to find out how going back to school can help you earn more.

If you're a valued employee who isn't making the money you deserve, you do have options. Know your value and make your case with the help of your free salary report. And know too, that many employers -- particularly larger employers -- have a little more in the "raise kitty" than they let on.

Membakar Kalori Saat Memasak

Health benefits of eating seafood

Research over the past few decades has shown that the nutrients and minerals in seafood can make improvements in brain development and reproduction and has highlighted the role for seafood in the functionality of the human body.

Heart health

Doctors have known of strong links between fish and healthy hearts ever since they noticed that fish-eating Inuit populations in the Arctic had low levels of heart disease. One study has suggested that adding one portion of fish a week to your diet can cut your chances of suffering a heart attack by half.

Fish is thought to protect the heart because eating less saturated fat and more Omega-3 can help to lower the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood – two fats that, in excess, increase the risk of heart disease. Omega-3 fats also have natural built-in anti-oxidants, which are thought to stop the thickening and damaging of artery walls.

Regularly eating fish oils is also thought to reduce the risk of arrhythmia – irregular electrical activity in the heart which increases the risk of sudden heart attacks.

Brain functionality

The human brain is 10-12% lipids, including the Omega-3 fat DHA. Recent studies suggest that older people can boost their brain power by eating more oily fish, with those who enjoy it regularly are able to remember better and think faster than those who eat none. Other research has also suggested that adding more DHA to the diet of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder can reduce their behavioural problems and improve their reading skills, while there have also been links suggested between DHA and better concentration. Separate studies have suggested that older people who eat fish at least once a week could also have a lower chance of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Joint benefits

Including fish as a regular part of a balanced diet has been shown to help the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis – a painful condition that causes joints to swell up, reducing strength and mobility. Studies also show that sufferers feel less stiff and sore in the morning if they keep their fish oil intake topped up.

Recent research has also found a link between Omega-3 fats and a slowing down in the wearing of cartilage that leads to osteoarthritis, opening the door for more research into whether eating more fish could help prevent the disease.

Iodine, Selenium, Vitamin A, Zinc

Fish is high in minerals such as iodine and selenium, which keep the body running smoothly. Iodine is essential for the thyroid gland, which controls growth and metabolism, while selenium is used to make enzymes that protect cell walls from cancer-causing free radicals, and helps prevent DNA damage caused by radiation and some chemicals.

Fish is also an excellent source of vitamin A, which is needed for healthy skin and eyes, and vitamin D, which is needed to help the body absorb calcium to strengthen teeth and bones.

Sidewalk cafe

A sidewalk cafe (sometimes called a pavement cafe, or patio) is an outdoor part of a coffeehouse or cafe. This is an area where customers go to relax, dine, and socialize. Other activities at a sidewalk cafe might include studying, reading, or using, if it is available, the cafe's internet access.

Sidewalk cafe ambiance

Many people who frequent sidewalk cafes, do so for the comfortable and quaint atmosphere. Typically in a sidewalk cafe there are tables and chairs [and sometimes benches] for dining and relaxing. Sometimes they are permanently outside, however they are often taken inside on closing time, or earlier if it gets colder. Usually there are parasols depending on the style and decor of any particular sidewalk cafe and there may be a low fence around it for protection against wind and/or for the purpose of decoration.

Fast food restaurants such as McDonald's also often have an outdoor dining area, thus making them sidewalk cafes.

Popular sidewalk cafe activities

Cafes where food is the main attraction usually are for dining, entertainment, and meetings, both business and casual. A cafe where coffee is the main attraction is usually for socializing, internet, reading, studying, entertainment, and dining. There are several types of cafes and venues as well as types of people that frequent these places for different activities.

Depending on the country and on permits alcohol may or may not be served. In some places local laws allow drinking alcohol in a sidewalk cafe but not on a public bench etc.

A sidewalk cafe's surrounding area

Typically a cafe or restaurant needs a permit from the municipality to have an outdoor part. This will not be granted if due to lack of space there is too much inconvenience for passers-by. The municipality may restrict the opening hours for the outdoor part.

Kue Khamir khas Pemalang
